Vote for Pay or Don’t Play

July 28th, 2005 Edit

Any doubt about the core values motivating members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly was removed yesterday when 15 House democrats lost their committee leadership positions because, apparently, they stood on conscience and principle and voted against raising their own pay.

“In all,” according to an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, “12 subcommittee chairmen and three committee vice chairmen who voted against the raise were removed or demoted to secretary. One was stripped of leadership in two subcommittees. Democratic lawmakers who voted for the pay hike were moved into the higher-ranking and higher-paid positions.”

Rep. Greg Vitali, one of those affected by the coup, suggested there might be some legal issues involved “They are using tax dollars to entice a legislator to vote one way or another . . . It’s not about the money, it’s about leadership acting within its legal authority. My gut feeling is they have exceeded it.”

Not to mention their moral authority.

For the House democratic leadership to punish members whose votes against the pay raise can be seen as an act of solidarity with the working and middle-class Pennsylvanians their party claims to represent is shameful.
